How Many Driving Lessons Do You Need in Canberra? Costs, Logbook Requirements & Expert Tips

Learning to drive is an exciting milestone, but one of the most common questions learner drivers ask is: How many driving lessons do I need before I can get my P plates?

Whether you’re a complete beginner, an adult learning to drive or an overseas licence holder adjusting to Australian roads, the number of driving lessons you need depends on your experience, confidence and progress.

At ACT Driving School, we provide professional driving lessons in Canberra, helping learners develop the skills and confidence needed to become safe, independent drivers.

In this guide, we’ll explain how many lessons you might need, how much driving lessons cost in Canberra, the ACT logbook requirements and how to choose the right driving school.

1. How Many Driving Lessons Do You Need in Canberra?

There is no fixed number of professional driving lessons that every learner driver must complete in Canberra.

Some students already have supervised driving experience and only need a few professional lessons to improve specific skills. Others are complete beginners who benefit from regular instruction.

The number of lessons you need depends on several factors:

• Your previous driving experience.
• Your confidence behind the wheel.
• Your understanding of ACT road rules.
• Your ability to perform manoeuvres such as parking, reversing and merging.
• How often you practise between lessons.
• Whether you’re preparing for a practical driving assessment or completing the ACT logbook method.

Beginners

If you’ve never driven before, professional driving lessons can help you develop essential skills, including steering, acceleration, braking, observation and vehicle control.

Intermediate learners

If you’re already comfortable controlling a vehicle, your lessons may focus on roundabouts, lane changing, parking, hazard-perception and driving in heavy traffic.

Experienced learners

If you’ve completed substantial supervised driving practice, a professional driving instructor can help identify areas that need improvement before an assessment.

The best approach is to choose driving lessons based on your individual progress rather than aiming for a predetermined number of lessons.

2. How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Canberra?

One of the most frequently searched questions is: How much does a driving lesson cost in Canberra?

Driving lesson prices vary depending on the driving school, lesson duration and whether you purchase individual lessons or a package.

ACT Driving School offers several driving lesson packages designed to suit different budgets and experience levels.

Prices are based on ACT Driving School’s advertised packages as of October 2026 and are subject to change. Check current prices and package conditions before booking.

Are driving lesson packages cheaper?

Yes, purchasing multiple driving lessons in a package can reduce the average cost per lesson.

For example, ten individual lessons at $92.90 each would cost $929.

ACT Driving School’s 10 Lesson Deal costs $829, representing a saving of $100.

Our 7 Lesson Deal for $599 is another popular option for learners who want to develop their skills through multiple sessions.

Explore our driving lesson packages to find an option that suits your learning needs.

3. What Are the ACT Learner Driver Logbook Requirements?

If you’re learning to drive in Canberra, it’s important to understand the ACT learner licence requirements.

The ACT has minimum supervised driving requirements that depend on the age at which you were issued your learner licence.

You must also satisfy other applicable licensing requirements before obtaining a provisional licence.

Can professional driving lessons count towards logbook hours?

Yes. Eligible driving lessons with an ACT-accredited instructor can provide additional credit towards your supervised driving requirements.

Under the ACT system, one hour of eligible instruction can count as three hours of supervised driving, for up to 10 actual hours of eligible instruction.

This means professional driving lessons can help you develop driving skills while contributing towards your required supervised practice.

However, professional driving lessons are not a substitute for developing sufficient real-world driving experience.

For the latest eligibility conditions and rules, visit the ACT Government website.

4. What Is the ACT Logbook Driving Method?

The ACT offers a competency-based training and assessment pathway, commonly known as the logbook method.

This allows eligible learners to demonstrate specific driving competencies through assessments conducted by appropriately accredited driving instructors.

Instead of relying entirely on one practical driving assessment, learners can progressively demonstrate the required skills.

These include:

Vehicle control: Steering, braking, accelerating and controlling the vehicle safely.

Observation: Checking mirrors, identifying hazards and maintaining awareness of surrounding traffic.

Road positioning: Maintaining appropriate lane position and negotiating intersections.

Parking and manoeuvring: Reversing, parking and performing other required vehicle manoeuvres.

Safe driving decisions: Recognising risks, selecting safe gaps and responding appropriately to road conditions.

The ACT logbook method may suit learners who prefer developing and demonstrating skills progressively.

At ACT Driving School, we provide competency-based driving instruction to help eligible learners work towards their licensing requirements.

5. What Will You Learn During Driving Lessons in Canberra?

Professional driving lessons involve much more than learning how to steer and operate a vehicle.

A qualified driving instructor helps you develop safe driving habits and prepare for different road conditions.

Canberra roundabouts

Canberra is known for its numerous roundabouts, including busy multilane roundabouts.

Learning correct lane selection, observation, signalling and giving-way procedures is essential for safe driving.

Parking and reversing

Many learner drivers find parking challenging.

Professional driving lessons can help you practise:

• Parallel parking.
• Reverse parking.
• Angle parking.
• Reversing safely.
• Vehicle positioning.

Lane changing and merging

Your instructor can help you develop techniques for mirror checks, blind-spot checks, signalling and selecting safe gaps.

Driving in busy traffic

Canberra has a variety of driving conditions, ranging from quiet residential streets to busy arterial roads.

Depending on your experience, lessons may include driving around Belconnen, Gungahlin, Canberra City and other suitable locations.

Hazard perception

Recognising potential dangers early is an important part of safe driving.

Your instructor can help you identify hazards involving pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles and changing road conditions.

6. Are Driving Lessons Worth It for Adult Learners?

Absolutely.

Not everyone starts learning to drive as a teenager.

Many adults in Canberra book professional driving lessons because they:

• Have never held a driver’s licence.
• Recently moved to Australia.
• Have not driven for several years.
• Feel nervous about driving in traffic.
• Want to improve their parking skills.
• Need to prepare for a driving assessment.

Learning to drive as an adult can involve different challenges, particularly if you have limited opportunities for supervised practice.

Professional driving lessons can provide structured instruction tailored to your confidence and experience.

At ACT Driving School, our instructors work with learners of different ages and experience levels.

7. Can Overseas Licence Holders Take Driving Lessons in Canberra?

Yes.

If you’ve recently moved to Canberra from overseas, professional driving lessons can help you understand local road conditions and Australian driving rules.

Common topics include:

• Driving on the left side of the road.
• Understanding ACT road signs.
• Navigating roundabouts.
• Following Australian give-way rules.
• Understanding local speed limits.
• Preparing for any required practical driving assessment.

The requirements for converting an overseas driver’s licence depend on several factors, including your age, country of licence issue and individual circumstances.

ACT Driving School provides instruction for overseas licence holders who want to improve their confidence and driving skills on Canberra roads.

Always confirm your specific licence conversion requirements with Access Canberra.

8. How Do You Choose the Best Driving School in Canberra?

Choosing the right driving school can make a significant difference to your learning experience.

When comparing driving schools in Canberra, consider the following factors.

Accredited driving instructors

Choose a driving school with appropriately accredited instructors who understand ACT road rules and driving assessment requirements.
